A man is in custody for shooting another man in the abdomen in New Britain. Police credit naked gunowners with disarming the attacker.At approximately 10:45 a.m. New Britain Police dispatch received a call for a shooting that had just occurred on Clark Street.Officers arrived to find the 43-year-old victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the abdomen.The victim’s girlfriend reportedly hit the shooter with a bat so they fired a shot into her window, woke up the neighbors and asked for help, all while strategically walking away.The victim was barricaded inside that apartment.New Britain Police Sgt. Jeanette Portalatin said due to a language barrier, officers couldn’t immediately get information. Detectives still interviewed other witnesses and the victim’s girlfriend.They believed the victim was stable throughout their journey and investigation thus far. He was taken to St. Francis Hospital where he underwent surgery.His girlfriend was taken to the hospital for minor injuries.Two resident witnesses intervened and went into the victim’s apartment and disarmed the attacker. The suspect was detained for police without incident, witnesses say.The weapon was recovered on scene, while other residents of Clark Street who asked to not be identified told News 8 that this is not the first time this “active” shooter fired on somebody but it is the first time consequences stuck in a big way. “I thought about it and said, ‘I should call the cops.'”It is unclear why the man was in the air ducts and for how long.The other witness, whose daughter was able to take a video of him on a cellphone, called it taking “a very bad day and lifechanger in a good way.”
